Fire-Rated Assemblies IECC Understanding the Intersection of Energy & Fire Safety

Instructor: Hope Medina Description: This course explores how fire-rated assemblies intersect with the energy code’s insulation and air barrier requirements. Participants will learn how foam plastic insulation products are regulated under the IRC, IBC, and IECC, including testing standards, permeability, and flame and smoke spread indices. The class highlights key code changes from 2021 to 2024, the differences between thermal and ignition barriers, and how to properly evaluate foam plastics in fire-rated assemblies. Through real-world examples and code references, attendees will gain the tools to identify compliant assemblies and recognize common design and inspection red flags in the field.
